Hard or Soft Water – Which One is Best
It is a good question. You may hear some people referring to water as either hard or soft. So what exactly does that mean and does it really matter?
Put simply, hard water is high in dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. The more these minerals are absorbed into the water, the harder the water is.
In contrast, soft water is lower in these minerals and tends to be higher in sodium.
Ironically, it could be considered that hard water tastes better than soft water as it contains minerals that the body needs whereas soft water tends to taste salty. Yet, hard water takes its toll on our clothes going through the washing machine and can also cause scaling on appliances. In fact, a relatively small amount of scaling on a water heater element will decrease the heating efficiency and end up costing more to heat the water.
What Determines if You Have Hard or Soft Water?
Besides the chemical or mineral content of your water the basic answer to this question is that it depends on the geology of where you live in England. It seems the South and East of England has the hardest water.
In contrast, Blackpool benefits from softer water which is better for your appliances. That said you may want to think about fitting a water filtration system if you want to improve the taste of the water you drink.
There are lots of ways to do this besides buying drinking water. One of the best things you can do this is by talking to a local plumber and ask for their advice as to which systems would best suit your plumbing system.
